Skiing and Ski Resorts near Mas des Hirondelles
During the season, shuttle buses run from Argeles Gazost to the various resorts so if you do not want to, there is no requirement to drive only the 5km down to Argeles Gazost.
The location lends itself for the convenience to visit 6 different quality ski venues in a week but each night to return to the steam room, jacuzzi, massage room, a log fire, a quality restaurant and either a movie or an early night!
If you can see Hautacam’s ski lifts from the terrace, you know that when you get there, you are going to be spoilt with warm sun and magnificent views.
For the non skiing members of the party, there is the market every weekday in Lourdes or Tarbes and on Tuesdays in Argeles Gozost to visit as well as a host of other activities in the area.
The ski resorts to visit in under an hour are as follows:
Hautacam
Hautacam at 25km Altitude 1500-1800m – the lifts are visable from our house so you know if you are a fair weather skier what to expect on arrival.
There are 15 pistes covering 26 km of skiing. 5 red, 5 blue and 5 green, 9 lifts and a luge for summer or winter fun.
Cauterets
Cauterets at 21km Altitude 1850-2450m. A delightful Alpine style village but in the Pyrenees(!) caters for every taste as there are 23 pistes covering 36km of skiing. 2 black, 7 red, 9 blues, and 5 green in addition a snowboard park.

Ski Cauterets
Luz Ardiden
Luz Ardiden at 32km 1800-2200m
There are 26 pistes. 3 black, 15 red, 4 blue and 4 green, 15 lifts, 5 km Nordic trail, 90 snow guns, luge piste and snow park. All over the area including Luz Ardiden a thermal bath is a ‘must have’.
Gavarnie-Gedre
Gavarnie-Gedre at 41km 1650-2400m. This is something really special in the heart of the Parc National des Pyrenees, a unique setting which has been recognised as a world heritage site by UNESCO. Whatever you are looking for you will find this whole area stimulating, natural and enriching.
There are 31 pistes covering 52 km of skiing. 4 black, 9 red, 11 blue, 7 green, snow park and luge pistes.
Tourmalet or Bareges and La Mongie
Tourmalet or Bareges and La Mongie at 30km 1250-2500m. One of the biggest resorts in our area but you have it all with 69 pistes and 43 lifts: 13 chair lifts including 3 declutching 6 mans’, 1 cabin lift, 1 telecabin, 26 ski lifts and 2 magic carpets; this represents 32km of lifts. In addition there are 170 snow guns, luge piste and a snow park. Bereges in addition has 14km of trails while La Mongie has 2km.
For something a bit different with a guide or instructor add another 1500m and from Pic du Midi enjoy a fabulous and long descent.
Pont d’Espagne
Pont d’Espagne 7km or15 minutes beyond Cauterets 1450+m is at the heart of the Pyrenees National Park with its truly impressive waterfall and spectacular scenery, it is a picture in both winter and summer. There are 36km of cross-country trails split into 5 loops including a 1.5km schooling trail. There is 1 chair lift and 2 ski lifts which cater for 6 km of pistes.
